  • Herman Steyn

    Executive Director

    Herman has been in investment management since 1985, holding senior positions in several asset management companies. He began his career when awarded a bursary from Old Mutual, studying a BBus Sci majoring in Actuarial Science, Statistics (Honours) and Economics. After a period at Old Mutual, he co-founded an asset management company. In 1993 Herman started the first index tracker fund, the Composite Unit Trust, in South Africa. This was sold to Investec, which he joined in 1995. He established Investec’s international fund management capability, establishing fund structures in Dublin. In 1998 Herman and Guy Toms founded Prescient Investment Management which applies its investment techniques to cash, bonds, equities, balanced portfolios and asset allocation.

  • Cheree Dyers

    Executive Director

    Cheree joined Prescient in 2005 as Head of Finance and Risk Management at Prescient Investment Management and served as a member of the Board. In 2007 she joined Prescient Securities (P-Sec) and is now the CEO and director of this and other group boards. Outside of Prescient she is a member of the Gen Re Board of Directors (a subsidiary of Berkshire Hathaway), as well as the PBT Limited board. Cheree has global experience, living and working in London in the investment banking sector. Upon her return to SA, she completed her post-graduate studies, joined KPMG, where she completed her articles in the financial services division and worked as an audit supervisor after completing her training contract. At Prescient Securities Cheree covers the Travel & Leisure sector and was rated #2 in the 2017 Financial Mail Ranking the Analysts Survey. She has a Bachelor of Business Science (Honours) (Marketing) degree, a B.Com degree and a post-graduate diploma in Accounting (all from UCT). She is a qualified Chartered Accountant, a CFA charterholder and a member of the South African Institute of Stockbrokers.

  • Willem Venter

    CEO & Executive Director

    Willem is a qualified Chartered Accountant (SA), a CFA charterholder, has a Masters Degree in Finance and is a qualified Chartered Global Management Accountant (ACMA,GCMA). Willem joined the Prescient Group at the start of 2007. He spent the bulk of his first ten years with the Group as CEO of Prescient Securities, while also playing an active role in the executive management structures of the broader Prescient Group. At the start of 2017 Willem was appointed CEO of Prescient Holdings. His working experience has broadly been in the field of finance. Willem acquired his grounding in stockbroking at UBS, an international investment bank, as the banks' South African platinum equity analyst. Willem started his working career in 1995 as an audit clerk with Deloitte and Touche. He has also worked at the University of Johannesburg lecturing finance at Honours and Masters degree level, the Industrial Development Corporation of SA as a project financier, and Pebble Bed Modular Reactor (Pty) Limited as manager in the office of the CEO.

  • Peter van Zyl

    Peter has wide-ranging operational experience in financial management and Financial Director roles and has entrepreneurial experience, with a particular focus on the Information and Communication Technology industry. From 2004 to 2009 he was Commercial Director of Sekunjalo Investments Limited, where he managed a wide range of transactions, including the Sekunjalo Health Care rights issue, the acquisition of a BEE stake in British Telecom and Marine Growers from Transnet, as well as the restructuring of Sekunjalo Financial Services.

  • Guy Toms

    Executive Director

    Guy, together with Herman, is credited with developing what is arguably one of the leading investment tools - Prescient's QuantPlus®. Guy is Prescient's Head of Interest Bearing and investment strategist and is widely respected in the investment management industry in the field of asset allocation, bond and derivative management. After graduating from the University of Cape Town with a Bachelor of Business Science degree in Mathematical Economics, Guy worked as a bond analyst and manager, and as derivative specialist at asset management houses including Colonial Mutual, Cape Gilt Investments and Southern Life. From 1991 - 1993 Guy Toms managed a gilt fund portfolio which remained consistently first in its category. At Investec, Guy worked as a bond manager and was responsible for all derivative exposure in the pension funds. He then joined District Securities Bank where he was later appointed a Bank Director.

  • Dr.Raphael Nkomo

    Executive Director

    Raphael joined Prescient Investment Management in August 2015 as Chief Investment Officer. His primary responsibility is overseeing the investment team, the investment philosophy and process and performance. Raphael has 15 years institutional investment and wealth management experience in South Africa and the United Kingdom. From 2006 to 2012, Raphael was the Chief Investment Strategist of QT Capital Management; a hedge fund specialised in Quantitative Portfolio Management strategies. From 2003 to 2006 he was the head of quantitative equity research at Investec Securities where he was nominated best quantitative research analyst in the Financial Mail survey of 2006. Raphael began his investment career at Investec Asset Management in 2001 as fixed income analyst and asset and liabilities portfolio manager. He obtained a master’s degree at Rand Afrikaans University (University of Johannesburg) in 2000, where he also subsequently completed his PhD. Before joining Prescient, Raphael was the head of investment and product strategy for the entire private client segment of Barclays Africa Group Ltd, including Wealth, AIFA, Business Bank and Private Bank. Raphael is a fellow and visiting lecturer at the University of Johannesburg where he teaches a financial engineering class for masters students.

  • Meyer Coetzee

    Executive Director

    Meyer joined Prescient Investment Management in September 2013 and currently heads up Retail Business Development. He is primarily responsible for the design and implementation of the sales and distribution strategy. His career started at Alexander Forbes in 1991 as an actuarial assistant in their retirement fund division. In 2000 he joined a niche asset manager in Cape Town as Marketing Manager and in 2001 became a Product Development Consultant with Galaxy Portfolio Services Pty (Ltd), the Linked Investment Services Provider within Old Mutual, which later became Fairbairn Capital Pty (Ltd). In 2004 he was appointed as head of Product Development and Portfolio Management at Symmetry Multi-Manager, a position he filled until his appointment at Prescient Investment Management in September 2013. A Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA), Coetzee holds a Bachelor of Commerce (Actuarial Science) degree from the University of Pretoria. He is a Fellow of the Institute of Actuaries and a member of the ASISA Fund Management Committee.

  • Farzana Bayat

    Executive Director

    Farzana has been with Prescient for over 10 years, where she is a director and responsible for all money market and income portfolios. She also oversees the credit research process at Prescient. Farzana completed her Business Science degree majoring in Actuarial Science (with Honours in Quantitative Finance) at the University of Cape Town. She then joined Old Mutual Investment Group’s Performance Research Team where she was responsible for analysing performance figures for various funds. She joined Prescient Investment Management in July 2003 to specialise in money market instruments and their derivatives. Farzana is a CFA charter holder.

  • Monei Pudumo-Roos

    Executive Director

    Monei Pudumo-Roos is the head of the Institutional Business Development team and has over 10 years’ experience in the investment management industry. Following the completion of a Honours degree in Finance, she joined Old Mutual Asset Managers in 2002 as a Portfolio Accountant/Administrator and was nominated as one of the participants in the Old Mutual Asset Management Academy. Monei became an Investment Specialist for Old Mutual Corporate where her responsibility was to service different Retirement Funds. In 2010 Monei was appointed as a Business Development Manager at Prescient Investment Management. Monei currently sits on the board of Prescient Retirement Funds as a trustee and chairman of the Investment Sub-committee. She is an Executive Committee Member of Prescient Investment Management and the Association of Black Securities and Investment Professionals.

  • Eldria Fraser

    Non-Executive Director

    Following the completion of a BCom (Hons) degree in Investment Management at Johannesburg University (RAU), she joined Deutsche Securities as an equity analyst. At Deutsche, Eldria started studying towards her CFA designation and was awarded the charter in 1998. Eldria moved to Investment Solutions and over the following 8 years covered all areas of the market, gaining broad knowledge of markets and the industry. At the end of 2005, Eldria joined Prescient as Chief Investment Officer. Today, Eldria is Non-Executive Director of Prescient Investment Management.

  • Daniel Polakow

    Executive Director

    Daniel completed his BSc (Hons) at the University of the Witwatersrand in 1994, and his MSc in 1997 and PhD in 2000 in Mathematical Statistics at the University of Cape Town (UCT). He entered the financial services industry first with Cadiz Securities as a derivative analyst, and in 2004 joined Peregrine Securities as director and head of research. During his 10 years on the sell-side he was consistently rated as one of the top analysts by the annual FM survey in both derivatives and quantitative research. Daniel joined Old Mutual – first in the investment group (OMIG) as a portfolio manager in 2009 - where his focus was in the areas of structural-arbitrage, risk mitigation and investment strategy, and later Old Mutual Emerging Markets (OMEM) where he was head of market-risk overseeing the hedge programme and investment strategy on behalf of Old Mutual shareholders. He left old Mutual to take up the position of executive director and co-head of research at Prescient Securities in May 2015 where his focus is on growing and refining the research capabilities. Daniel’s status as a chartered statistician was conferred by ICCSSA in 2013. He holds an adjunct Associate Professorship at the UCT School of Actuarial Sciences.

  • Goolam Modack

    Independent Non-Executive Director

    Goolam Modack is the Deputy Head of the College of Accounting and Section Head for Financial Reporting at UCT. He teaches undergraduate and postgraduate financial reporting courses and is the convener of Financial Reporting III. Goolam is the co-author of Financial Accounting: GAAP Principles and an adjudicator for the EY Excellence in Integrated Reporting survey. Goolam serves as an independent, non-executive director on a number of company boards.

  • Rachel Nxele

    Rachel completed her BSc at the University of Kwa-Zulu Natal in 2009, her PGDip at the University of Pretoria’s Gordon Institute of Business Science (“GIBS”) in 2016, and is currently completing her MBA at GIBS. She has assumed several director role in the financial services and property development sectors owing to her recent appointment as a Non-Executive Director at Prescient Securities. Rachel believes in leading a balanced life. She enjoys travel, the exploration of various cultures and promoting the empowerment of women across the continent.

    Carey has over 23 years’ experience in the investment management industry having started his career with UAL Merchant Bank in 1982. His initial experience was in the private client area before assuming responsibility with the Executive Director for business development of both the institutional and unit trust areas. He left the industry in 1987 to start his own marketing and advertising company. In 1994 he rejoined the financial services industry and after short stints with Fleming Martin and UAL, joined Nedcor Bank as head of Retail Liabilities. Carey was also tasked with the establishment of Nedbank's offshore and domestic investment products. During this time he was CEO of the Nedcor Bank Management Company with particular responsibility for all operational and strategic functions. He was later transferred to NIB as CEO of their management company and as a member of both NIB and NIB Asset Management's executive committees. Carey has been a member of many committees in the unit trust industry, including chairman of its Fund Management Committee.

  • Craig Mockford

    Executive Director

    Craig completed his B.Com (Accounting and Information Systems) and post-graduate diploma in Accounting at the University of Cape Town in 1994. He is a member of the South African Institute of Chartered Accountants. After completing his training contract with Deloitte & Touche in 1997, Craig spent time in London working for both Abbey National Treasury Services and the Royal Bank of Scotland in their Treasury and Capital Markets area. Craig returned to South Africa at the end of 1999 where he worked for Prudential Portfolio Managers Unit Trusts Ltd. He was appointed as a director of the management company at the beginning of 2006. Craig joined Prescient in August 2006 and is the Chief Executive Officer of Prescient Fund Services.

  • Taryn Elario

    Executive Director

    Taryn is the Joint Head of Operations at Prescient Fund Services and has over 15 years of investment administration experience. Taryn started at Investec Asset Management in 1999 working on all aspects of the fund administration area, including client administration and projects such as the transitioning of Fedsure Asset Management records onto Investec Asset Management operating system. Taryn moved to State Street in 2005 where she was one of the team leads responsible for the transition of the accounting business from Investec to State Street. Taryn joined Prescient in 2007 as a business analyst and was later appointed executive director of Prescient Fund Services. She holds a B.Com degree in Economics obtained through the University of South Africa.

  • Garth Foster

    Executive Director

    After completing a Degree in Business Science from the University of Cape Town, Garth joined Ovation Global Investment Services in 2002, the only independent Linked Investment Service Provider at the time. There he gained extensive experience in operations and systems utilised by LISPs. In 2007 he joined Prescient where he was exposed to more comprehensive fund accounting and portfolio administration. As Prescient grew, his exposure to all aspects of the business and industry grew and he is currently Joint Head of Operations at Prescient Fund Services and is also an executive director.

  • Grant Jacobi

    Executive Director

    Grant Jacobi is the Head of Operations at Prescient Fund Services (Ireland) Limited, where he is responsible for the overall Fund Operations delivery, including Fund Accounting and Transfer Agency. He holds a Bachelor of Commerce degree and Graduate Diploma in Commerce and has over 16 years’ experience in the investment funds industry. Prior to joining Prescient Fund Services in 2011 he held a number of management positions within the ASB Group, a subsidiary of Commonwealth Bank of Australia. He has extensive experience in managing Fund Operational teams, and has been responsible for managing Prescient Fund Service’s Risk and Compliance functions since Prescient Fund Services was authorised as a UCITS manager in 2011.

    Craig completed his B.Com (Accounting and Information Systems) and post-graduate diploma in Accounting at the University of Cape Town in 1994. He is a member of the South African Institute of Chartered Accountants. After completing his training contract with Deloitte & Touche in 1997, Craig spent time in London working for both Abbey National Treasury Services and the Royal Bank of Scotland in their Treasury and Capital Markets area. Craig returned to South Africa at the end of 1999 where he worked for Prudential Portfolio Managers Unit Trusts Ltd. He was appointed as a director of the management company at the beginning of 2006. Craig joined Prescient in August 2006 and is the Chief Executive Officer of Prescient Fund Services.

  • Zane Meyer

    Zane Meyer is an Independent Non-Executive Director of Prescient Life, Prescient Management Company, a director of the law firm Faure & Faure Inc and a member of the Prescient Holdings Audit Committee. After obtaining a law degree from Stellenbosch University (1986), Zane joined the Department of Justice as a public prosecutor. He joined C&A Friedlander as a candidate attorney before moving to SG Hoffman & van Tonder where he was admitted as an attorney in 1990. Zane was appointed a partner at SG Hoffman, Swart & Meyer, specializing in litigation, conveyancing, commercial, labour and criminal law. The firm merged with Faure & Faure Inc and he was appointed a director. Zane is a Small Claims Court Commissioner, a member of Paarl Rotary Club and was Chairman of the governing body of Paarl Boys High School (2010 to 2012).

    Goolam Modack is the Deputy Head of the College of Accounting and Section Head for Financial Reporting at UCT. He teaches undergraduate and postgraduate financial reporting courses and is the convener of Financial Reporting III. Goolam is the co-author of Financial Accounting: GAAP Principles and an adjudicator for the EY Excellence in Integrated Reporting survey. Goolam serves as an independent, non-executive director on a number of company boards.

  • Daniel Acres

    Executive Director

    Daniel Acres joined Prescient in July 2010. His primary responsibilities are as CEO of Prescient Life, which includes life company strategy, SAM compliance and Prescient’s Seamless Transition offering, which is designed to help fund members transition into retirement in a cost-effective and risk-appropriate manner. He is also actively involved in the development and implementation of new pre and post retirement investment products. Daniel is a trustee of the Prescient Retirement Funds. Daniel has been in the financial services industry since 2007. Prior to joining Prescient, Daniel was a financial risk consultant at Oliver Wyman Financial Services in London. Before entering the financial services industry, Daniel held a junior lecturing post at the University of Cape Town in the Finance Department where he lectured and tutored Finance to undergrad students up to Honours level. Daniel has a Master of Business Science degree in Finance and a Bachelor of Business Science Degree in Actuarial Science.

  • Esmarie Strydom

    Executive Director

    Esmarie has over 30 years of industry experience which includes stockbroking, pension fund asset management, investment consulting and asset management. She started her career at Ivor Jones, Roy (now Deutsche Bank) where her duties ranged from Gilt dealing to financial analysis. During this time she passed the Stock Exchange exams and became a member of the Johannesburg Stock Exchange. Esmarie joined stockbroking firm, Huysamer Stals where she was appointed as a director. In 1995 she was appointed as the executive responsible for the investment management of the Transnet Pension Fund’s assets. In 2000 the Transnet Pension Fund was split into three separate funds. She represented the Transnet Funds on various Private Equity Governing Boards and Investment Committees. In March 2007, the Investment Services of the Transnet Pension Fund Administrators were sold to Fifth Quadrant (now Towers Watson). Esmarie and her team moved to Fifth Quadrant Actuaries and Consultants where she retained the responsibility as consultant to the three Transnet funds, then totalling R63bn. In October 2007 she accepted an appointment as Chief Executive Officer of Blue Ink Investments (Pty) Ltd, a Fund of Hedge Fund business in the Sanlam stable. In February 2011, Esmarie joined Prescient where her main responsibility was institutional business development. In February 2014, she was appointed as an executive director of Prescient Life and her responsibilities moved from Prescient Investment Management to Prescient Life, focusing on providing retirement solutions to institutional clients.

He began his career when awarded a bursary from Old Mutual, studying a BBus Sci majoring in Actuarial Science, Statistics (Honours) and Economics. After a period at Old Mutual, he co-founded an asset management company. In 1993 Herman started the first index tracker fund, the Composite Unit Trust, in South Africa. This was sold to Investec, which he joined in 1995. He established Investec’s international fund management capability, establishing fund structures in Dublin. In 1998 Herman and Guy Toms founded Prescient Investment Management which applies its investment techniques to cash, bonds, equities, balanced portfolios and asset allocation.

  • Carey Millerd

    Carey has over 23 years’ experience in the investment management industry having started his career with UAL Merchant Bankin 1982. His initial experience was in the private client area before assuming responsibility with the Executive Director for business development of both the institutional and unit trust areas. He left the industry in 1987 to start his own marketing and advertising company. In 1994 he rejoined the financial services industry and after short stints with Fleming Martin and UAL, joined Nedcor Bank as head of Retail Liabilities. Carey was also tasked with the establishment of Nedbank's offshore and domestic investment products. During this time he was CEO of the Nedcor Bank Management Company with particular responsibility for all operational and strategic functions. He was later transferred to NIB as CEO of their management company and as a member of both NIB and NIB Asset Management's executive committees. Carey has been a member of many committees in the unit trust industry, including chairman of its Fund Management Committee.

    Ryan currently serves as the Head of Department of Finance and Tax at the University of Cape Town. He has 14 years of teaching and supervision experience in finance at both undergraduate and postgraduate leval, but his focus in recent years has been on the latter. Ryan has an active role outside of academia as a hedge fund quantitative consultant. He currently serves as the industry expert on a Risk Advisory board for a local hedge fund manco.

  • Liang Du

    Executive Director

    Liang Du joined Prescient Investment Management in 2005 as a portfolio analyst on the Equity team where he helped establish Prescient’s first Equity product. Liang was later promoted to fund manager of the Positive Return and Balanced portfolios and eventually became head of Asset Allocation, responsible for asset allocation decisions across all Prescient portfolios. Liang, born in China, has always taken a keen interest in investments in Mainland China and after a decade with Prescient in South Africa decided to head up a new business unit for Prescient in China. Today Liang and his team are responsible for all investments in China. Liang has an MBA with distinction from UCT, CQF, is a CFA charterholder, and graduated with a B.Bus.Sc degree from UCT.

  • Dillie Malherbe

    Mr Malherbe qualified as a Chartered Accountant in South Africa and worked with the predecessor firm of PricewaterhouseCoopers before joining Rand Merchant Bank in 1985. In 1990 he joined Rembrandt Group Limited and was involved with Richemont at that time. Since its formation in 2000, he served first as Chief Executive Officer and then as Deputy Chairman of VenFin Limited until 2009 when that company was acquired by Remgro Limited. Mr Malherbe continues to serve as a director of Richemont Securities S.A., Remgro Limited (appointed non-executive Co-Deputy Chairman in November 2014), Reinet Investments Manager S.A. and Pension Corporation Group Limited,

  • David Ibbotson

    David is a Director of Stonehage Fleming Group. He has over twenty years’ experience in offshore legal and financial services, with particular experience in funds, trust, banking, multi-jurisdictional regulatory matters and litigation. Prior to joining the Group in 2010, David obtained a combined Honours degree in Law and French from the University of Cardiff and a Certificate d’Etudes Juridiques from Universite de Nantes before qualifying as an English Barrister (non-practicing).

  • Peter Liddiard

    Peter holds a Bachelor of Commerce from the University of Port Elizabeth. His post-graduate qualifications include a Diploma in Accountancy from the University of Port Elizabeth, Diploma in Chartered accountant (S.A) from the University of Port Elizabeth and Diploma in advanced management at the Harvard Business School (Boston USA). He has been in the industry for a number of years and during his tenure he worked for the likes of Deloitte & Touche doing accounting articles, Syfretts Limited (which later became Nedcor Investment Bank) as an investment analyst/unit trust fund manager, Coronation Capital Holdings Limited as Head of Information Technology Research. He then went on to work for Ixchange Technology Holdings Limited in 2000 as a Corporate Analyst, VenFin Limited in 2002 as an Investment Executive and Remgro Limited in November 2009 as an Investment Executive. Peter currently holds the position of Senior Investment Executive at Reinet Investment Advisors Limited.

  • Niall McCallum

    Niall McCallum is Head of Stonehage Fleming’s Corporate Services Divisions in Jersey and Luxembourg. He joined the Stonehage Fleming Group in 2007 to develop the corporate services and mutual fund business and is a director of numerous mutual funds, corporate and other structures. Prior to joining the Group, Niall worked with Deutsche Bank International in their Corporate Trust division where he was responsible for corporate services provided from Amsterdam, Delaware and Jersey. He has over thirty years’ experience in the offshore finance industry. Niall has a BSc (Hons) in Pharmacology from the University of Liverpool and is also an ICSA Associate.

    Guy heads the Investment Management business of the Stonehage Fleming Jersey office and has over 30 years’ experience in the investment and wealth management sector. Prior to joining the Stonehage Fleming in 2007 he was Business Development Director with HSBC Investments and has also worked in the Trust, Private Banking, Investment Management and Insurance industries in Europe, Asia, the Middle East and Africa. Guy obtained a BA (Honours) in Economics followed by a range of professional qualifications and is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute for Securities & Investment.
