    The panel examined what is driving private markets from the margins to the centre of institutional portfolios — and how that shift looks through an allocator’s lens.

    Panellists weighed how much SA institutions can credibly commit to private markets, and the gating and liquidity mechanisms that give clients comfort in the vehicles offering that access.
  • AI is reshaping manager research and due diligence
    With AI dominating manager and client conversations, the panel set out how it is being embraced in research and due diligence — and what allocators actually want from managers whose pitches lean on it.
  • Public and private markets are converging
    As risk, return and liquidity characteristics converge, panellists asked whether the public/private distinction still matters, how allocation frameworks should adapt, and whether democratization makes illiquidity alpha harder to harvest for semi-liquid strategies.
  • Navigating Regulation 28 for private market ambitions
    Drawing on the Eskom Pension & Provident Fund’s experience holding private equity and hedge funds within Regulation 28, the panel explored how SA allocators fulfil private market ambitions within the rules.

  • Concentration cuts both ways
    The panel examined how the Mag 7 now drive a record share of the S&P 500 while five North Asian names make up over 32% of MSCI EM — one a bet on the demand side of the AI build-out, the other on the supply side. With both increasingly expressions of the same AI capex cycle, panellists questioned whether EM-versus-DM remains the right axis for allocation at all.
  • Two concentration risks, opposite directions
    Panellists weighed the structural underweight to China against the overweight to US mega-cap tech, both of which carry real policy and geopolitical risk. The discussion turned on which is harder to underwrite at today’s valuations — a cheap, improving China or an expensive, crowded US complex — and how each is sizing the two positions.
  • Where the active opportunity actually sits
    With mega-caps dominating both benchmarks, the panel explored where genuine dispersion remains — the EM “long tail” of South Africa, Brazil and Mexico, or DM small- and mid-caps and the S&P “other 493.” Panellists debated where active management is more likely to add value, and where the JSE realistically fits.
  • Growth and discount versus quality and returns
    The panel set the prospect of EM growing earnings ~21% this year against 13% for DM, at a clear valuation discount, against DM’s decade-long record of higher ROE and more consistent capital returns. Panellists considered which matters more for the next leg — EM’s faster, cheaper growth, or DM’s proven earnings quality.
  • The dollar as the swing factor
    Panellists examined the dollar’s dual role — a weaker dollar is the classic EM tailwind, yet it also flatters unhedged DM returns for a rand-based investor. The panel weighed whether the dollar path has become the single biggest determinant of the EM-versus-DM decision, and whether the rand leg changes the math enough that the equity call becomes secondary.
  • Market velocity and the AI-integrated investment team
    The panel reflected on markets shifting from human-paced trading to ultra-high-frequency, algorithm-driven flows, with portfolios reallocated in seconds. As machine learning becomes the norm in decision-making, panellists set out how they are adapting their processes and building the equities investment team of the future.
