In conjunction with Prescient, Winemag.co.za presented the sixth annual Chardonnay Report, aptly re-named the Prescient Chardonnay Report (previously the Christian Eedes Chardonnay Report).

When Chardonnay is at its best, it’s arguably the grape responsible for the greatest dry white wine in the world. It has a universal following, by far the best selling wine, white or red, in the United States for instance. And there is a well-established frame of reference when it comes to discussion of style and quality, the traditional home of the variety being Burgundy in the northeast of France where it has been grown for centuries but benchmark examples occurring around the world especially from Australia and California, USA.

In South Africa, serious attempts at growing the grape date from the early 1980s and the variety is currently the seventh most planted making up just over 7% of the national vineyard. All of the above makes the South African wine industry’s efforts with it worthy of scrutiny.

Blind Tasting

The judging panel at the blind tasting was chaired by Christian Eedes who was joined by Roland Peens and James Pietersen of Wine Cellar, local merchants and cellarers of fine wine.  The front-runners in the Chardonnay category were identified and scrutinised and a line-up of 60 wines was collated.   The line-up partly consists of category examples which had fared well in recent local or international competitions and partly from those producers that are considered to be the best in their field, even if not broadly celebrated.

Awards Ceremony

Prescient hosted the Prescient Chardonnay Report Awards Ceremony in conjunction with  Winemag.co.za at the Smith Studio in Cape Town on 19 October 2016.

There were 60 wines in the line-up, submission by invitation only. 35 wines were rated 90 or higher on the 100-point quality scale and these were recognised during at the event.  To view the full list of top performing wines, view the full Prescient Chardonnay Report.

Invited guests included wine media, the winning wineries, wine makers, significant high profiled personalities and special Prescient guests.

Public Tastings

Winemag.co.za, in conjunction with Prescient hosted a Public Tasting event, in Cape Town on 2nd November, to showcase the top-rated Chardonnays.  The evenings will be  presented by Christian Eedes and two of the top winemakers within the category.

At the public tasting events, the top-rated wines in the Prescient Chardonnay Report are presented accompanied with tasting notes & score sheets.  The evenings are presented by Christian Eedes and one or two of the top winemakers within the category.

The objective of the public tasting events is to showcase the top-rated wines in the Chardonnay category to the interested public.

We believe an excellent match exists between the preservation of capital and the preservation of fine wine.  Prescient will continue its association with Winemag.co.za next year when we sponsor the Cabernet Sauvignon 2017 report.
